Overall Aims

In order to raise students’ cultural competency, this project aims to:

• Utilize the conceptual framework of cultural competency proposed by Camopinha-Bacote to increase students’ desire, knowledge and awareness in preparation for skills development and clinical encounters with people who have a Culturally And Linguistically Diverse (CALD) background.

Objectives

To prepare students to apply the increased knowledge and self-awareness in effective inter-cultural communication in clinical settings.

Specifically, by the end of this course, you will…

• Understand the importance of inter-cultural competency in healthcare practices
  
• Have reflected on how your culture influences your practice
  
• Know the elements of cultural competency
  
• Have an understanding on how patients’ culture will impact on your interaction with and management of patients
  
• Discuss culture and how it influences your interaction with patients
  
• Be able to apply the increased knowledge and self-awareness in effective inter-cultural communication in clinical settings
